A day at the races - Brunette Races

The Brunette Races, for those of you viewing this from outside the Territory, is an annual event at held at Brunette Downs Station that attracts outback cattlemen (and women) from all around. Over four days they test their skill (and their manhood!) in a series of events in the camp draft, rodeo and race program. Then of course there is the bar - where men are made! It is one of those truly Australian spectacles - the stuff that legends are made of - and one of those traditions that make us "Australians" though most of us will never actually witness it let alone take part!

This is camp drafting - the aim being to cut one beast out of a heard in "the camp", take it out the gate, then guide it around a series of posts within a set time. Of course, no-one told this to the beast who does his level best to run everywhere but through the course - and therein lies the challenge!

In this shot, George Scott from Georgina Pastoral Company - a Scott family company that owns a group of stations including Lake Nash Station. George is one of the land holders I work with.

Though not officially on the program, "romance" is another common activity at the Brunette races!

A couple of cuties at one of the kids playgrounds - conveniently located right next to the bar!

Bronco riding at the rodeo. I'm told that in the Territory it is pronounced ro-dee-o, NOT ro-day-o!

Peering out of "the camp" just before being cut out of the herd.

He looks pretty serious, but it's all front!

Waiting to enter the camp

This is a real family event too, with lots of kids events.... and an ambulance standing by!

Welcome to my Blog!

Now why didn't I think of this sooner??? A blog is MUCH better than Facebook for keeping you all up with where I'm at and making it much easier for you to see my photos.... because just I know that's what you really wanted!

So here it is.... my new blog. And it all came about thanks to a few simple words of encouragement from a stranger from Chile who just so happened to be in the middle of nowhere right where I was, that passed through my life for only a few minutes (quite literally), but who gave me some much appreciated encouragement.

So to catch you all up, here are some snaps of my adventure so far....

The Devils Marbles are just down the road from Tennant Creek... about a 110km drive. On a windy day some of the cloud formations are amazing.

This waterhole is at Lake Nash Station - one of the properties I work with. I took this one from the helicopter at sunrise...

and on the ground later that day

More of the Devils Marbles

Another one out of the helicopter. In the foreground is a stand of gidgee trees and the background is the downs country

The Alexandria Station Airfield at sunrise. Alexandria is another property I work with.

And one of the choppers I was in...

I got off the road for this one!

One of the many cattle yards at Lake Nash Station.

Mustering at Lake Nash - I think that is Brad the head stockman on the horse.

A snappy gum and in the background some of the landscape around Tennant Creek
